Career growth often happens when we step beyond what's familiar.
As a UI/UX Designer at Hubexo, Maureen expected to grow her design skills. What she didn't expect was how much her mindset would evolve along the way. Driven by curiosity and a desire to keep learning, she found herself exploring new perspectives, developing new capabilities, and discovering opportunities that challenged her to think differently about her work and her career.
Throughout her career, Maureen has always been driven by a desire to improve experiences and solve problems. But over time, she realised her approach to those problems was changing.
"Somewhere along this journey, my thought process began to shift," she explains. "Step by step, I started approaching challenges differently and thinking about them in a more structured way."
What surprised her most wasn't what she was learning, but how those experiences were changing the way she worked, collaborated, and viewed new opportunities.
As Maureen took on new challenges, she found herself exploring topics and perspectives far beyond her original role.
The experience pushed her outside her comfort zone and exposed her to new ways of thinking, helping her better understand the needs of the people she worked alongside every day.
"I didn't become a developer," she says. "But I started to understand how developers think."
That understanding strengthened collaboration across teams and helped her see problems from different points of view. Rather than working within individual disciplines, she was increasingly able to connect ideas, people, and processes to create better outcomes.
Looking back, Maureen doesn't see her journey as a story about technology or tools. Instead, she sees it as a story about being curious enough to keep learning.
By embracing new challenges and remaining open to change, she discovered skills, perspectives, and opportunities she never expected when she first started her career in design.
"At first, I thought I was learning new ways to do my job," she reflects. "Looking back, I was learning new ways to think."
For Maureen, the most valuable lesson wasn't mastering something new. It was recognising that growth often begins with a willingness to see things differently.
That mindset continues to shape her career today, encouraging her to stay curious, keep learning, and explore what's possible next.
Because sometimes the biggest achievements aren't the things we build. They're the ways we grow.
